How to Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in the Lancaster EMS Volunteer Program. As a volunteer with us, you will become part of a cohesive and growing family that truly cares about its volunteers, employees, patients and the community that we proudly serve.

We offer volunteer opportunities for individuals holding current certifications or to those presently enrolled in a First Responder, EMT or Paramedic program. For those currently in training, our Program gives you the opportunity to ride on an ambulance using your newly learned skills and getting hands-on experience. For those already certified, our Program encourages you to progress from Trainee to Crew Chief through evaluations and constructive critiques. Our active volunteers are offered a wide variety of continuing education classes, most at no cost to the volunteer.

The Lancaster EMS volunteers are actively involved in the Company and they are utilized for emergency and non-emergency patient care assignments. The non-emergency duties may include standbys at Lancaster City events, Long's Park, Thomas the Tank, and many other community and sporting events throughout Lancaster County. The emergency duties include volunteering on our 911 ambulances and long distance transports.

Prerequisites for Clinical Volunteers:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older. If a minor, must have parent or legal guardian permission.

  • Must be currently enrolled in a credentialed First Responder or EMT program, have current CPR/AED certification, and provide a letter of support from the applicant's program course coordinator; or...

  • Must be a current First Responder, Emergency Responder, EMT, Paramedic or PHRN with CPR/AED.

  • Must successfully pass a pre-placement physical, a PPD skin test, urine drug screen, criminal background, driving history records, and child abuse clearance before being offered a position into our volunteer program. These tests will be at no cost to you.

We also offer volunteer opportunities to those that may not be interested in emergency services. These positions include volunteering on a wheelchair van providing routine transportation of patients, or volunteering in our business office performing office duties.

Lancaster EMS requires all of our volunteers to volunteer a minimum of 24 hours each month to achieve Crew Chief and Driver status, then the requirement is 48 hours each quarter to maintain active volunteer status. These requirements are reduced for non clinical volunteers.

Lancaster EMS offers a unique opportunity for individuals to learn at their own pace in a busy EMS system. Whether you are a student or a new or seasoned provider in EMS, you will have the opportunity to care for patients while side-by-side with some of the most skilled and experienced Paramedics and EMTs in the business.
